Welcome to our Web site
We are focused on community health and community development based on community strengths rather than remediation of perceived weaknesses or deficits. We have a particular interest in the role of Community Health Workers.

CDC has released a new e-learning series, "Promoting Policy and Systems Change to Expand Employment of Community Health Workers," authored by Carl Rush of Community Resources LLC. Click here to use this free learning resource!

Carl is speaking at:
  • the National Association of Community Health Centers' Community Health Institute in San Diego, August 29
  • the CDC Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Practitioners' Training Workshop in Atlanta, Sept. 14
  • the National Academy for State Health Policy in early October!
  • The Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky grantee training, Nov. 14 in Lexington

The Texas Legislature passed House Bill 2610 in May 2011, directing the State to study the CHW field and make recommendations to maximize the benefits ofr this workforce.  Get bill info at http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/BillLookup/History.aspx?LegSess=82R&Bill=HB2610

As of the 2009 APHA Annual Meeting in Philadelphia (Nov. 7-11, 2009) the APHA Community Health Worker Special Primary Interest Group is now a Section!  The APHA Governing Council also approved a new Policy Statement supporting CHWs, replacing an earlier version approved in 2001!  See the Policy Statement at http://www.apha.org/advocacy/policy/policysearch/default.htm?id=1393

*** Congratulations to Lisa Renee Holderby-Fox, a CHW who heads the Massachusetts Association of CHWs, was recently appointed as one of 15 members of the new National Healthcare Workforce Commission, created by the Affordable Care Act! ***

At a statewide "summit" of employers and other stakeholders in Houston (June 17-18, 2010), a decision was made to petition the Texas Public Health Association (TPHA) to create a "CHW Workforce Section" to support the development of the CHW workforce.  We still need a few current TPHA members to affiliate with the new Section!  To join this effort, please send us an email.  For more on the Summit, including key presentations, visit http://www.chwtexas.org/TexasCHWSummit.aspx

The revised rules for the Texas Promotor(a)/Community Health Worker (CHW) Training and Certification Program were published in October 2010.  Click on the following link for a Summary of Key Rule Revisions.
